Red Wine of the Earth
En demi-muid, or puncheon ~ Aged primarily in 500 and 600
liter barrels (this is a little more than twice the size of a
conventional barrel)
Deep ruby red with a pale ruby rim. Dark and almost leathery on the
nose, with hints of forest floor and mint, blackberry, black
cherry, and bramble fruit aromas. Upon opening, oak aspect is quite
evident, and finish seems a bit abrupt, but with decantation and
left open for several hours, becomes well integrated in the wine.
Dark fruits on the palate, but accented with bright cherry,
currant, spice, and pepper. Earthy and a little gamey with soft,
supple texture. Peppery Syrah flavors slightly predominant.
While the youthful '08 is excellent right now, aging it for 2-3
more years would be all to the good.
