The 2010 Cunning, while not stylistically straight down the center of the Bonny Doon turnpike, is nevertheless an impressive drink. Made from grapes hand-harvested from 100+ year old ungrafted, head-trained, dry-farmed carignane from the Sacramento Delta, it has concentrated fruit, good tannic grip, and dominant notes of plum, blackberry, and Morello cherry. Despite full ripeness, the wine maintains a lovely mineral aspect and will remain lively for several years to come. Pair with rustic stews, grilled meats, pepper-rubbed steaks, cassoulet, or moussaka. An excellent partner with a charcuterie or cheese plate—be sure to include hard aged and blue cheeses, plus a few smoked meats or cheeses and a scattering of dried figs. Vital Statistics: Blend: 76% carignane (old vine), 24% syrah Vineyards: Evangelho, Gonsalves, Alamo Creek, Bien Nacido Appellation: Contra Costa County Alcohol by Volume: 13.9% Serving Temperature: 55-60º F TA: 7.8 g/L pH: 3.71 Cellaring: 5 years from release (Feb. 2012) Production: 490 cases Label Artist: Gary Taxali
