Dan Berger’s Weekly Wine Commentary, September 5,
This wine from old vines of San Benito County offers meaty and deep
blueberry aromas. A great wine that should age well.
The ’10 Old Telegram is one of the finest OTs in years,
harkening back to the great vintages of the ‘80s and early ‘90s.
The wine is a blend of two ancient vineyards, geographically
disparate, but both head-trained, dry-farmed and imbued with
ancient wisdom. Deep plum color, not quite optically opaque but
saturated. On the nose, cinnamon, bouillon cube, juniper and maybe
pink peppercorn. The palate is exceptionally savory: Earthy and
bloody meaty with a strong salty minerality, verging on iodine.
Very plush, mouth-coating tannins. An OT for the ages. Food
pairings: Stews, chops, braises.
