2009 Bien Nacido Syrah
Varietal Blend: 100% syrah
An exceptionally cool and elegant vintage, this bottling shows off the typical smoked meat/bacon fat character that typifies Bien Nacido. Very peppery and minty, with excellent fresh acidity (another trademark of Bien Nacido Syrah), rich dark fruit, and moderate but firm tannins. Immense savoriness (somewhat of a Bonny Doon signifier), with an exotic herbal element, that rather subjectively reminds me a bit of chimichurri. This wine calls out (bleats?) for roasted lamb.
Varietal Blend: 100% nebbiolo
Our last Nebs (at least for the indeterminate future) is arguably the finest Nebbiolo we have ever produced. Incredibly bright in the nose (not always the first descriptor that comes to mind with Nebbiolo), the wine is just bursting with fruit—raspberry, blackberry, cherry, sloe plum, and the classic suggestions of tobacco and menthol. In the mouth, you will find firm but not foreboding tannins, again that BDV savoriness, and a sense of just remarkable depth and a lovely saline/mineral quality.
2009 Le Cigare Volant Réserve
Varietal Blend: 30% syrah, 28% grenache, 22% mourvèdre, 20% cinsault
What is most noteworthy about this wine is its amazing silky texture, savoriness and infinite length. One finds many of the flavor elements typically associated with Cigare, most dominantly that of Montmorency cherry, but there is also a wonderful suggestion of sarsaparilla, licorice, juniper and menthol, and of course the wonderful earthy notes of truffle. But it is the extraordinary contribution of the lees as liaison, acting as the perfect host or hostess at a cocktail party, keeping all of the elements in graceful play.
2008 Le Cigare Volant en demi muid
Varietal Blend: 45% grenache, 30% syrah, 13% mourvèdre, 7% cinsault, 5% carignane
Deep ruby red with a pale ruby rim. Dark and almost leathery on the nose, with hints of forest floor and mint, blackberry, black cherry, and bramble fruit aromas. Upon opening, oak aspect is quite evident, and finish seems a bit abrupt, but with decantation and left open for several hours, becomes well integrated in the wine. Dark fruits on the palate, but accented with bright cherry, currant, spice, and pepper. Earthy and a little gamey with soft, supple texture. Peppery Syrah flavors slightly predominant.
2010 Le Cigare Blanc Réserve
Varietal Blend: 56% roussanne, 44% grenache blanc (Certified Biodynamic®)
The wine has a rich, unctuous texture, despite its modest (12ish%) alcohol, as well as possesses the most satisfying savoriness. In the nose, there is a wonderful suggestion of hazelnuts (hmm, white Burgundy, anyone?), as well as a beautiful fragrance of wintergreen and a wine-like pear. A great gastronomy wine, one that will perfectly suit rich, cream-based dishes.
2006 "Riesling to Live" Sparkling Riesling
Varietal Blend: 100% riesling (Neustadt clone)
A sparkling example of Riesling produced à la méthode champenoise and finished nature, that is to say, with no additional sweetening. This wine, if not a raison (or Riesling) d'être, is sympa beyond words with Asian or fusion cuisine. This effervescent Riesling was fermented to dryness in stainless steel, before tirage bottling in the traditional méthode champenoise style in June 2007, then aged on lees for 30 months and disgorged in February 2010. No dosage was added to the wine, as to maintain its crisp, refreshing aspect and ensure the fullest expression of its bracing minerality.
