First nose is dark and brooding—something out of a Grimm’s fairy tale. Hmm, gingerbread? But also scents of blackberry, menthol, sarsaparilla and violets (from vio?) In the mouth, very soft tannins, firm acidity and great persistence. This wine benefits enormously from decantation and will live a very long time.
Call it a conceit of antiquity that once the soul of the Platonic Grape enjoyed a mystical unity of self-sufficiency, but through unfortunate circumstance, that completeness or integrity was tragically lost. Imagine that the soul of every Red Grape yearns for its missing part; perhaps it will find completion in the embrace of the very different Other—undoubtedly the soul of a White Grape. There is no question that Syrah and Viognier are true soul mates. Viognier adds an exotic fragrance to Syrah, helps to create a richer, softer mouthfeel and just makes for a more complete and satisfying taste experience. From longer-chain tannins to the Great Chain of Being, we are privileged to observe momentary glimpses of felicity and order.
