LeCigare Volant is Bonny Doon Vineyard’s homage toChâteauneuf-du-Pape, a special Southern Rhône style cuvée ofgrenache, syrah, and mourvèdre with a soupçon of cinsault. Theexceptional 2008 vintage produced a highly concentrated, powerfulCigare, bright and wonderfully gamey with cherry, spice, sassafras, currant and bramble fruits wound around an earthy, savory core.

Tasted together, the three bottlings vividly demonstrate thestylistic differences imparted by choice of cooperage and differingexposure to oxygen, oak, and yeast lees during élevage. Thewine en demi-muid is perhaps more “modern” and muscular, while the en foudre expresses a more old-fangled winemakingstyle, quite restrained and elegant, very Old World. Thenormale is a harmonious blend of the two.

The suite includes a bottle of each of the following wines:

2008 Le Cigare Volant normale
Varietal Blend: 45% grenache, 30% syrah, 13% mourvèdre, 7%cinsault, 5% carignane
A worthy successor to the ’07, though perhaps slightly lessmuscular, but conversely, incrementally more elegant. We havegotten particularly adept in allowing for the expression of awonderful savoriness in Cigare, and a pretty nice mastery oftannins. Recent vintages seem to show more structure than yearspast, and we are convinced that this vintage will be capable ofvery long aging.

2008 Le Cigare Volant en demi-muid
Varietal Blend: 45% grenache, 30% syrah, 13% mourvèdre, 7%cinsault, 5% carignane
Deep ruby red with a pale ruby rim. Dark and almost leathery on thenose, with hints of forest floor and mint, blackberry, blackcherry, and bramble fruit aromas. Upon opening, oak aspect is quiteevident, and finish seems a bit abrupt, but with decantation andleft open for several hours, becomes well integrated in the wine.Dark fruits on the palate, but accented with bright cherry, currant, spice, and pepper. Earthy and a little gamey with soft, supple texture. Peppery Syrah flavors slightly predominant.

2008 Le Cigare Volant en foudre
Varietal Blend: 45% grenache, 30% syrah, 13% mourvèdre, 7%cinsault, 5% carignane
Bright ruby red with a pale ruby rim. Wildly and soulfully aromatic(garrigue de Salinas Valley?), with floral herbs, menthol, and alittle fennel in evidence. Bright cherry, fresh red currant, andcranberry flavors undergirded with forest floor and mushroom.Counter-intuitively, there seems to be greater grip on the palatethan with the demi-muid. The en foudre bottling is about soulfuldepth, there is a line that runs through it from the filigreedaroma all the way to the great depth of the wine’s very lingeringfinish.

*Offer does not include sales tax. The Wine Formerly Known as Clos de Gilroy(TWFKaCdG) pays homage to the quaint, rustic town of Gilroy, thespiritual locus of all matters alliaceous. However, note well, thefruit for this wine does not, despite its name, derive from Gilroy(clos, but no Cigare), but instead from the Alta Lomavineyard in Greenfield (a particularly cool site for grenache) thegravelly Alamo Creek Vineyard near Santa Maria and some trulyancient mourvèdre vines in the sleepy Sacramento Delta town ofOakley, CA. Grenache is really the star of the show, and the wineexhibits all the hallmarks of exceptional coolth—brightraspberries, red fruit, a strong suggestion of white pepper, and asupple, lingering finish.

Tasting Notes
The strawberry-rhubarbity of grenache is complemented by somediscreet meatiness from the mourvèdre and syrah’s discreet herbal, mentholated calling card. Brilliant rubescent pink with a fuchsiarim, the wine is intensely aromatic, with notes of strawberry, raspberry, white pepper, and wild herbs. Supple and mediumbodied, the dominant flavors on the palate are of red fruits: strawberry, red currant, kirsch, and rhubarb. The ’12 vintage is perhapsslightly riper than Gilroy’s d’antan, but remains remarkablynimble on its feet. Fruity and spicy but fully dry, this wine isthe perfect foil for all manner of grilled meat or vegetables, roasted poultry, the aïoli platter (naturellement), andanything prepared al fresco—especially when anointed witholive oil.

Vineyard | Production Notes
Bonny Doon Vineyard’s winemaking practice is exceptionallylight-handed, with minimal intervention and manipulation. Wecreated the 2012 Clos de Gilroy from hand-harvested grapes derivingfrom three Central Coast Vineyards. The fruit was hand-sorted,gently de-stemmed, and cold soaked to enhance flavor and colorextraction, and each lot was fermented separately. Extendedmaceration and fermentation took place under slow, cool conditions, and the lots were carefully blended to ensure a harmonious balancein the resultant wine.

Vital Statistics
Varietal Blend: 84% grenache (Alta Loma Vyd.), 11.5% syrah (AlamoCreek Vyd.), 4.5% mourvèdre (Del Barba Vyd.)
Appellation: Central Coast
Alcohol by Volume: 13.3%
TA: 3.65 g/L
pH: 3.6
Production: 1,444 cases
Serving Temperature: 53-55º F
Optimal Drinkability: Drink now - 2018

Visit Red to see additional products in this category.

Cool as in the Blues, or at leastblue fruits: blueberry, blackberry and Damson plum. Cool as in atouch of Funk (Miles Davis and George Clinton would have loved thiswine) but in a very good way. The wine is a field blend of diverseclones, which really enhances the complexity of the wine. In thecellar, it is subjected to a reductive élevage, a practicethat allows for the development of extremely sophisticated earthand animal tones in the finished wine. This wine will workexceptionally well with anything that has been spit-roasted, viz.lamb, spare ribs. Syrah’s earthy soulfulness seems to complementfattier cuts of meats—beef or lamb cheeks, for example, that havebeen cooked slowly, a daube de boeuf, f’rinstance.
Vital Statistics
Blend: 100% syrah
Appellation: Edna Valley (San Luis Obispo)
Vineyard: Jespersen
Alcohol by Volume: 12.7%
Production: 483 cases
Serving Temperature: 53-55º F
TA: 6.5 g/L
pH: 3.62
Optimal drinkability: Drink now-2020

Visit Red to see additional products in this category.

For many years, westruggled to ripen the Nebbiolo grapes in the late, great Ca’ delSolo vineyard, and resorted to airdrying a portion of them (usually35-40%) to concentrate their ripeness, and would always just barelyeke out a balanced, ripe wine. In ’09, possibly as a result of thewarmer season, lower crop and general vitality of the vines, weelected to not dry any of the fruit, but likewise substantiallythinned the vines to achieve evenness of ripening.

We went with a rather long cuvaison for this wine (30 daysand thirty nights) but were very gentle with our extraction—youreally have to watch it with Nebbiolo to avoid picking upbitterness. The wine was aged in a 1000 liter wood upright tank, which is just about perfect for Nebbiolo. (If the wine sees toomuch oxygen, the tannins will dry out—the kiss of death forNebbiolo.)

The ’09, our last Nebs (at least for the indeterminate future) isarguably the finest Nebbiolo we have ever produced. Incrediblybright in the nose (not always the first descriptor that comes tomind with Nebbiolo), the wine is just bursting withfruit—raspberry, blackberry, cherry, sloe plum, and the classicsuggestions of tobacco and menthol. In the mouth, you will findfirm but not foreboding tannins, again that BDV savoriness, and asense of just remarkable depth and that lovely saline/mineralquality for which I live. There are so many things about this winethat I love, but chiefest among them is the fact that the winemoves; in the glass (or better, decanter), it continues to evolveover an evening. Nebbiolo is along with Pinot noir and Syrah, oneof the true genius grape varieties; there is a remarkablesoulfulness to the best examples of the variety, and thisparticular one, I submit, stands among the very best. It willconfound everything that you know or imagine you know aboutNebbiolo and California. Even if you are not a Barolo person—I’m sosorry if that might be the case—this wine will be an opportunityfor you to behold this grape in all of its nebbiolous glory.

Vital Statistics
Blend: 100% Biodynamic® nebbiolo
Vineyard: Ca’ del Solo Estate
Appellation: Monterey
Production: 508 cases
TA: 7.5 g/L
pH: 3.40
Alcohol by Volume: 14.4%
Serving Temperature: 55-60ºF
Optimal drinkability: Drink now-2025
Certified Biodynamic®

Visit Red to see additional products in this category.

2010 Syrah "Le Pousseur"

Enchanting andcapitvating rather than overpowering, it disarms by itsstrangeness. Like Borge's Zahir, syrah makes an indelibleimpression. One will wander the world till the end of one's days, its sublime, haunting fragrance gradually displacing all thoughtsand memories, including the knowledge of one's own name.
Tasting Notes
Oh those Europeans and European-styled wines! Initially very closedwhen you first meet them. Air (and time) lures them out of theirprotective cocoon. Nose of anise, raw meat, bacon fat, leather, plum, and wet stone. In the mouth, what is most noteworthy is thetexture - sleek, almost oily. Then there is the enormously savory,umami-intensive, almost saline aspect of the wine. Palpableacidity, medium tannins and discreet fruitiness evocative ofconfiture of fraises de bois. The 2010 vintage wasincredibly cool (in every sense), producing among the most"classic" expressions of syrah that I have ever observed inCalifornia (at very discreet levels of alohol. Certainly the mostexpressive vintage and possibly finest vintage of Pousseur we haveproduced to date.
Our ’10 Syrah "Le Pousseur" is named for an alchemist andtrickster, but is withal an incredibly accessible wine, great bythe glass but also a felicitous partner to all manner of roastedmeats, poultry, game, wild mushrooms, and well aged cheeses.
Vineyard | Production Notes
We created the 2010 Syrah "Le Pousseur" from syrah sourced from twoexceptional cool climate Central Coast growers in the Santa Mariaarea, known for exceptional quality and close care of theirvineyards. The grapes from each vineyard were hand harvested, sorted, and fermented individually. The result is an elegant blendof concentrated black fruits, spice, and earth. For optimalenjoyment, we suggest a gentle decanting, allowing the wine tobreathe.

Vital Statistics
Varietal Blend: 100% syrah
Appellation: Central Coast
Vineyards: 57% Alamo Creek, 43% Bien Nacido
Alcohol by Volume: 12.8%
TA: 6.6 g/L
pH: 3.63
Serving Temp: 55-60ºF
Cellaring: 5+ years from release (February 2013)
Production: 1,016 cases
Label Artist: Bascove

Visit Red to see additional products in this category.
