“R” is for pirates, as well as for the very special selection of Grenache from Rancho Solo Vineyard that we planted years ago. Grenache is not a grape that easily stands alone and this part of the world is not always the most hospitable spot for red grapes. Nevertheless, this particular selection of Grenache has such a unique character—lovely, balanced acidity even at a fairly zaftig degree of ripeness—that it stands proudly tout seul. There is a special place in our hearts for Grenache at Bonny Doon Vineyard; it is the misunderstood, Ugly Duckling cépage par excellence.
This second vintage of “Cuvée R” embodies the sensory memory of al fresco grilling in Provence—earth, grilled and roasted flavors, tarragon, black cherry—all in total balance. It’s Provençal daube at the Sunday table. On the palate, yangmei (aka yumberry or bayberry) and garrigue, with a stony streak right down the middle. Fantastic minerality.
Food Pairing Notes
