Ah, the route de vin not taken… Composing a Cigare blend (an annual occurrence) is a bit like solving a puzzle, but in fact there are an infinite number of potential solution sets. We don’t really aim for stylistic consistency in Cigare, but rather to produce the absolutely most complex, seductive, compelling wine we can. As a result, there are often some extremely interesting bits that just don’t get included.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
In 2015, it was the Mourvèdre (77% in this blend) that ended up as the odd cépage out. Its character is unmistakable in this Alternate Dooniverse. A very open and frank nose—sappy, sarsaparilla, strawberry jam, with a suggestion of raspberry or blackberry leaf, verging on mintiness—definitely more floral than fruity. And there is the subtle character of beef bouillon, which is a total Mourvèdre give-away. But here’s the real oddity of this wine. Upon opening, one imagines that this is perhaps a “light” or perhaps “medium”-bodied wine, that is to say, almost weightless on the palate with very soft and elegant tannins. But the wine will fool you. Like a proper Burgundy, with air and time, the wine just blossoms in the glass, gradually building in body; you will definitely want to drink this in a balloon glass, if you can swing it. (After a fair bit of reflection, I’ve decided that this sort of unfolding is perhaps the one feature shared by all of the wines that I absolutely adore.)
