Attack of the raspberries! A very lively raspberry, slightly peppery and green peppercorn nose make this an immediately appealing proposition. Fresh, bright acidity, crush of wild berries follows through on the palate. Light to medium tannin, very persistent finish. Very bright, deep plum color with an undeniable quality of “Pinot-ness” in the nose. (I define that as a sort of beetroot meets licorice meets candied cherry.) A very complete Pinot that will repay years in the cellar.
We have literally gone to the Enz of the earth to find an appropriate spot for Pinot Noir in California, in this case, to the end of Lime Kiln Rd. in the Cienega Valley of San Benito County. No one has truly explained why Pinot Noir loves limestone so much, but Pinot’s affinity for calcareous soil is an incontrovertible truth. We seek both elegance and power in Pinot, and of course, the haunting fragrance that seems to most reliably arise from a calcareous provenance.
I am obsessed with Pinot Noir, as you have undoubtedly learned by now, and have looked both high and low for the Pinot of my dreams.
Food Pairing Notes
Find a bird, any bird. Other ideas include Pan-Seared Duck Breasts with Red Wine-Raspberry Sauce, beet ravioli and, of course, Thanksgiving dinner.
